There is a lot of stigmatization of mental illness in our society and around the world. It’s something people survive with quietly because they are told not to talk about it, to others or to doctors. There is a shame in asking for help, and a fear of saying the wrong thing when trying to help. What I’m thinking of exploring is a collection of greeting cards for those with mental illness, those that need support who may want to thank their friends for trying. There already exist “get well” cards, but they are marketed as being for physical injuries and they usually have a “soon” attached to them. What I would like is a series that says “it’s hard”, “you can’t understand it”, “it’s not going away”, but “thank you for being there for me”.
I would like to focus on the cards and creating a series where each design is multi-purpose in a sense, where they can apply to different people based on use of color and pattern or illustration. My idea is that each card has a simple “thank you” on the front with a pattern or illustration in a specific color based on the mental illness, the inside has a specific message, and the back has an explanation of the mental illness that matches the color.
